Anthills Elephants and other Fascinations growing up in Africa eBook Rina Flanagan
I enjoyed this light hearted book on life growing up in Rhodesia, now called Zimbabwe. If you are looking for a taste of the life of a child growing up at the end of colonial southern Africa then this book is it. Each chapter is a different story/anecdote.Product details

Anthills Elephants and other Fascinations growing up in Africa eBook Rina Flanagan Reviews
Written with a naïveté that could only come from a child's-eye view of the world, this charming book brought laughter, tears and so many memories of growing up in Africa. Recommended for anyone who shared the privilege of living (and surviving!) in a now-forgotten world . . . .and anyone who would have like to!
A enjoyable read, I feel like I have a new understanding of life in a part of the world I likely won't see. It brings to mind how much the world shares when it comes to the basic experiences we all grow up with. And yet, life in Southern Africa is so very different. This was a fun read and I very much look forward to more. I would reccomend this book to anyone with a sense of aventure and a love of travel.
More of an insight into childhood than Africa, but both are entertaining in this bio.
I found the stories to be a quiet and revealing look into the life of a little girl in Africa mid-twentieth century. I enjoyed meeting the engaging characters and comparing her life with mine in a small eastern town. It was interesting to note the similarities and the differences. I really enjoyed reading the stories and felt like I was having good conversations with the author as we remembered our youth. I also enjoyed reading about a life style that is probably gone for good whereas mine can still be found here and there in the rural parts of the USA. This little book is a delightful afternoon's read!
This story is a wonderful account of a young girl growing up in Rhodesia.
Rina weaves an endearing tale of what life was like in a complex society in the the 60's and 70's. It was in many ways an idyllic life for a child with lots of freedom and adventures.
The book gives a sensitive overview of the relationship between the black and white cultures, as well as family life during this time.
It was a story I could not put down until I had finished reading it and I was left hoping to read more. I trust Rina will soon have another book continuing where this one ended.
An excellent first novel.
An interesting and amusing set of anecdotes from a childhood growing up in Zimbabwe, back when it was colonial Rhodesia.
Absolutely delightful, simple to read and share with others the joys of growing up on a farm in Africa
This evoked so many similar stories of my youth in Northern Rhodesia ,
The stories are real ,the characters come to life , the sights , sounds and smells are well crafted
Highly recommended as a light but enjoyable read
